How it works

A few minutes a month, and your books are done.

  1. 1Upload your statementsDownload them from your bank's website, the way you would for your accountant, and drop them in. Statements from RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC, National Bank, Tangerine and Amex are read as they come.
  2. 2Spark sorts every transactionRent goes to rent, fuel to vehicle costs, a customer's payment to sales, with the GST/HST split out. A payment from your chequing account to your Visa is recognised as a transfer, not spending.
  3. 3You answer the few it can'tWhen Spark can't tell what something was, like whether a Costco run was for the business or for home, it asks. One tap. Tick “always” and it won't ask about that store again.

It asks. You tap. It remembers.

Most transactions sort themselves. The rest come to you as a short list, with Spark’s best guess already filled in. Check it, tap save, and the next one like it is done for you.

Everything a small business needs

Without paying for software, or learning to be a bookkeeper.

Real books

Proper double-entry bookkeeping with a Canadian chart of accounts, set up for a corporation or a sole proprietor.

Your GST/HST return, worked out

The figures for your return come straight from your books, with the date it's due. You or your accountant file it with the CRA.

Receipts, sorted

Take a photo of a receipt. Spark reads it and attaches it to the card or bank transaction it paid for.

Invoices and bills

Send invoices in your business's name. When the customer pays, Spark spots the deposit and marks the invoice paid.

Cash, thirteen weeks ahead

A forecast from your regular money in and out, open invoices and tax payments, so a tight month isn't a surprise.

Ready for your accountant

At year-end, one download with everything your accountant needs for your tax return, mapped to the CRA's forms.

Bookkeeping

$350a month

A Spark bookkeeper does it for you: sorts every transaction, reconciles your accounts and closes each month. You’re only asked what they can’t know.

Questions

Is it really free?
Yes. Keeping your own books with Spark is free, with no card and no trial that runs out. If you'd rather a bookkeeper did it for you, that's $350 a month.
Why would a lending company give bookkeeping away?
Because businesses with tidy books get better answers when they need financing, and when that day comes we’d like to be who you ask. Nothing in your books is shared with a lender unless you apply. What we arrange.
Does it connect to my bank?
Not yet. You download your statements from your bank's website and upload them, which takes a few minutes a month. Uploading the same statement twice never counts anything twice.
Does Spark file my taxes?
No. Spark works out the figures for your GST/HST return and puts together your year-end package. You, or your accountant, file them.
I use QuickBooks or Xero. Can I switch?
Yes. Export your trial balance and your customer and supplier lists, and Spark brings the balances and names across. Your old history stays where it is.
Who is the bookkeeper on the paid plan?
A Spark bookkeeper working for us from South Africa. They see only your books, never a loan application, and only after you've agreed to it. You can change your mind at any time.
Is my information safe?
Your statements are kept in private, encrypted storage and opened only through links that expire. Security and the privacy policy explain exactly what happens to it.
